What is public on Telegram, and what is not

Start with the shape of the place, because it decides what any search can do. Telegram is two things at once. Public channels and public groups are open pages: anyone can open a t.me link in a browser and read the posts without an account, and search engines index them — you can even run a Google search restricted to t.me. That half is genuinely public.

The other half is closed. One-to-one chats, secret chats, and private groups and channels sit behind Telegram's servers. No one outside them can read them, and no face search, ours included, can reach inside. When a person messages you on Telegram, the conversation itself is private. What is public is only what they chose to show on their profile: a display name, an optional @username, and one profile photo.

Start with the free route

Before you pay for anything, spend a few minutes on tools that cost nothing. Take a clean screenshot of their profile photo and run it through Google Images, Google Lens and Yandex. If that picture was lifted from a stock library, a model's page, or someone else's public account, a reverse image search often finds it straight away.

If you have their @username, there are free checks worth doing by hand as well.

• Open t.me/username in a browser. For an ordinary account it shows the name and photo; for a public channel or group it shows the posts, no account needed.
• Use Telegram's own search field. It finds usernames, public channels and public groups by name; searching posts across all public channels is a Premium feature, the Posts tab. It never reaches private chats, and never works by face.
• Search Google for the username, including site:t.me, to find public channels, groups or posts where that handle has appeared.
• Drop the profile-photo screenshot into images.google.com and yandex.com/images. Yandex is unusually good at faces and at the corners of the web the others skip.

What our face search does here

Telegram is not a face-indexed directory the way a public photo grid is — there is no open album of every user's face to match against. So our search does not look 'inside Telegram.' It does the more useful thing: it takes the face in the photo you have and looks for that same face across the public web — public Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, news, forums, any page that is openly indexed.

It reads the geometry of the face — the fixed proportions a haircut or a filter does not change — rather than the filename, so it can match a different photo of the same person, not only the identical file. What comes back is a list of public pages where that face appears, each with a direct link and a confidence score. On Telegram, that is the honest job: the account tells you almost nothing, so you take the face and look for where else in the open it appears.

Why so many scams end up on Telegram

This matters because of how people arrive on Telegram. A large share of romance and investment scams begin somewhere else — a dating app, an Instagram DM, a stray message — and the first real move is always the same: come talk on Telegram. The reason is plain. Telegram has little of the moderation a dating app runs, and once you are in a private chat there is no trail left behind for anyone to check.

From there the script is well worn: warmth, then a stuck parcel or a family emergency or, most often now, a can't-lose crypto 'investment' on a channel or bot set up just for you. A fresh Telegram handle with a warm profile photo and no history behind it is exactly the case a face search is built for. How to read what comes back

A result is a lead, not a verdict, and what you are hunting for is a contradiction — the same face wearing a story that does not match the one you were told.

• The same face under a different name is the strongest signal. A warm 'Deniz' on Telegram who turns up as someone else entirely on an old public profile is worth stopping over.
• A stock or model photo means the picture was never theirs. Catalogue-perfect, too-clean shots are the ones to check first.
• Public pages that contradict the story — another city, another job, another partner — tell you the person is borrowing a life.
• A high score is similarity, not identity. Siblings and unrelated look-alikes can score high, so read the whole page before you decide anything.

The honest limits, Telegram's own

A face search is powerful, and it still stops at real walls. Some of them are specific to how Telegram works.

• Private chats, secret chats and private channels are invisible. If it is not a public page, no search reaches it.
• A user with no username and their photo set to private leaves almost nothing to work with. Telegram identifies people by a phone number, and a phone number is not something we search or would want to.
• The profile photo itself can be a decoy. Telegram lets a user hide their real photo from non-contacts and show a different 'public photo' in its place — so the face you are searching may have been staged for exactly this.
• Usernames are not identity. They can be changed at any time, and they are even bought and sold, so today's @handle may have belonged to someone else last month.
• Absence is not proof, and a clean result cuts both ways. Finding nothing does not make someone honest; finding a page does not make them who it says.

Where the line sits

There is a right use for this and a wrong one. A face search is for verifying someone you are actually dealing with — the handle that appeared out of nowhere, the match who moved you to Telegram before they would video-call, the account using a photo that might be yours — or for finding where your own face has been posted. It is not for following someone who has not invited you in. Use it for a question you have a real stake in, and stop there.

If something feels wrong, keep the screenshots, report the account to Telegram, and never send money or crypto to a face you have not met in person. A search can help you see more clearly. What you do with what you see is still yours to weigh.
